Simply Oregon specialises in Oregon (Douglas Fir) from Canada's west coast, where the climate produces the tight, straight grain the species is known for.
We import large flitches, hold substantial stock at our Dandenong South yard, and cut, grade and finish every order in-house.

The last of Melbourne’s Oregon mills
Oregon has been part of Melbourne’s building story for more than 150 years.
By the 1860s, imported Oregon was already being processed locally. C. & J. Smith’s Collingwood Sawmills operated steam-powered machinery, turning imported Oregon into timber for Melbourne’s growing building industry.
Over the following century, Oregon became an important structural timber. Large Douglas Fir sections arrived from North America and were resawn by mills around Melbourne into framing, beams, joinery and other building sizes. During the post-war building boom, Oregon was imported and processed in enormous volumes.
As cheaper plantation pine and engineered timber gradually replaced Oregon for everyday house framing, the specialist resaw mills disappeared.

Our own connection to that industry goes back more than four decades. The bandsaw operating in our Dandenong mill today has been cutting Canadian Oregon since 1981. Under previous owners Trevor and Brenda Blake, the business continued to specialise in Canadian Oregon, supplying large sections and cut-to-size timber to builders, timber merchants and specialist customers around Australia.
Today, Simply Oregon continues that tradition as Australia’s last dedicated Oregon resaw mill.
While Oregon may have been replaced by cheaper plantation pine for everyday framing, there is still no real substitute for the strength, scale, warmth and natural beauty of Douglas Fir when the structure is designed to be seen.
Large Douglas Fir flitches still arrive from British Columbia and are resawn, graded and finished in our Melbourne mill to the dimensions each project requires — continuing a method of supplying Oregon that has been part of Melbourne’s timber industry for generations.
